Katarina Witt started skating when she was five. As her natural talent was more evident and she was accepted into an Karl-Marx-Stadt school that is geared towards children who have a sporting aptitude. Here she first met her trainer Jutta M ller. Witt made her mark by finishing second at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Since then, her grace and beauty have captivated the attention of everyone. Olympic success Katarina (now Witt) won the Women's Figure Skating Gold Medal during the Sarajevo Winter Games. The following year she took home another contest that was even more competitive. The free skater was unable to win however she was awarded the gold medal for the mandatory figures and the short program. Witt was the first woman ever since Sonja Haenie to be the winner of a second time in figure skating. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her accomplishments in the film industry as an actor. She took part in the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Though she failed to get a single medal she delighted fans with the fact that she finished seventh. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
